AROUND THE COUNTIES By STAN WILTON Week ending 15th February 2020
As I recall it wasn’t anywhere near as wet as this 49 years ago to the day. And I remember it well, because it was D-Day – the day the country changed over to decimal currency. SHERWOOD COLLIERY took advantage of the remaining 15 clubs in the League being sidelined by the wind and rain to replace Eastwood Community at the top of the table thanks to a narrow win over the improving SHIREBROOK TOWN. Two goals in the first 17 minutes from Nathan Clarke and Tim Gregory set the home side up for three points, but it became far from easy for them when George Simpson put Town back into the game on 52 minutes, but Colliery held out to go top. The only other game played saw CLIPSTONE register a welcome home win at the Lido Ground with the only goal of the game against visiting BELPER UNITED scored by Liam Corrington two minutes before the break. To compliment the two Saturday games there were also two in midweek which beat the weather and neither of which bothered the league table or positions. RAINWORTH MINERS WELFARE joined the other clubs through to the semi finals of the Jenkins & Jenkins sponsored League Cup with a comfortable 3-0 home Quarter Final win over INGLES. Joe Naylor opened the scoring for the Wrens five minutes before the break and second half goals from Nathan Benger and Lewis Weaver paved their way through to the passage for a place in the last four. Elsewhere, in the Nottinghamshire FA Senior Challenge Cup KIMBERLEY MINERS WELFARE came a Fourth Round cropper on their visit to Central Midlands League Premier North leaders Newark Town, losing by five goals to nil. For the record, George Asplin, Tyler Martin, Darryl Price and a brace from Lewis Chambers did the damage.
