AROUND THE COUNTIES By STAN WILTON Midweek to October 9th
Success was achieved in the early rounds of the Jelson Holmes Leicestershire FA Senior Cup by INGLES who defeated Birstall United Social by 3-0. A hat-trick from Kyle Fowkes did the trick with goals in 42, 55 and 85 minutes. Over at the Riverside BARROW TOWN’s progress was not quite so easy, but Midland League Division One side NKF Burbage were finally beaten by the odd goal of five with Harry Dunn being responsible for the Riversiders hat-trick which finally killed off the visitors. Dunn’s goals came on the half hour, his second from a 42nd minute penalty, and the last with fifteen minutes of the game remaining. Our clubs suffered mixed fortunes in the Derbyshire FA Senior Challenge Cup. HEANOR TOWN progressed as a result of a 4-1 win at fellow East Midlands Counties League club SHIREBROOK TOWN. Jamie Sleigh putting the Lions in front on 19 minutes. Will Dodds hit a cracking leveller just after the half hour mark. Tristan Matthews took advantage of a defensive error to put Heanor back in front on 57 minutes and two headers from substitute Sam Birks on 89 and 90+1 minutes finally killed off a brave home team. Perhaps the surprise of the night was to see lowly New Mills from the lower division of the North West Counties League with only one win to their name all season so far, win their tie at GRAHAM STREET PRIMS by 2-0. All the more surprising in view of the fact that Prims were previously unbeaten at home this season and have been scoring goals for fun. Funny things happen in the Derbyshire Senior Cup. Whoa! Hold on tight! BORROWASH VICTORIA are back to winning ways. Winning becomes a habit and it doesn’t matter how you do it – even if it comes on penalties. The Vics Derbyshire Senior Cup tie with BELPER UNITED ended goal-less and with draws in this competition going straight to penalties the Vics took their chances to taste victory for the first time this season by scoring four spot kicks to Belper’s three.
