East Midlands Counties League
Jenkins & Jenkins League Cup Final Tie
Saturday 4th May 2019 (at Clipstone FC)

NEWARK FLOWSERVE (0)0(0)0 v CLIFTON ALL WHITES (0)0(0)0
(After extra time 4-1 Pens)
Flowserve avoided an Anstey Nomads (who finished runners-up in League and Cup last season) with an emphatic penalty shoot-out to put a new name on the Jenkins & Jenkins sponsored trophy. It was a shame they did not show this kind of finishing during the previous 120 minutes as it would have made an earlier finish to what was in every respect a very poor game between two teams who appeared to be terrified at the prospect of losing.
The fact that both sides went into the game on the back of a series of poor results may well have been some way towards the cause of a very disappointing Cup Final.
Clifton made a fair bit of the early running but a lack of ideas in front of goal and Newark’s stout defending made sure there was little in the form of goalmouth action. When Flowserve did get forward Danny Meadows (twice), Jamie Lloyd and Bradley Wells all wasted free kick opportunities from around the edge of the penalty area.
The clearest chances of a tight first half were produced just after the half hour mark. On 32 minutes Tyrell Shannon-Lewis was sent clear but Clifton custodian Scott Miles saved at the expense of a fruitless corner.
Three minutes later Ashley Way got through at the other end on the right and his vicious shot was parried away by Joe Searson and hastily wafted clear by skipper Tom Potts.
And there was more excitement in stoppage time – and God knows the game needed it – when Tom Maddison and Ash Way combined to put Jevin Seaton in for Clifton but his shot lacked any sort of power to trouble Searson.
For Newark, Sam Agar’s nicely hit volley on Bradley Wells’ cross cleared the bar as half-time brought a temporary halt to the boredom.
Six minutes into the second half the ball was in the net and we hoped that this would bring about more excitement to the rest of the game. Sam Agar’s shot from just outside the penalty area beat Miles but the ball came back into play off the crossbar. Danny Meadows put the rebound into the unguarded net only for a Referee’s Assistant to spoil the day with an off-side flag. It never rains but it pours!!
Two minutes later Clifton’s Daryll Thomas became the first of seven players to receive a yellow card as boredom became littered with niggles; two flare ups; and Newark substitute Jack Beckett being more than a little fortunate to see the game out.
Thomas failed to get a touch onto an excellent Martin Ball free kick in front of goal for Clifton.
Scott Miles produced an excellent save to Meadows shot from Agar’s head down on 58 minutes, and these were the only times either goal looked like falling until eight minutes from the end of the first 90 when Miles, for the second time in the game, fumbled an Agar cross and Shannon-Lewis could only find the side netting.
The first half of extra time brought one further opportunity when Jamie Lloyd headed a Meadows corner over the bar and then remonstrated for all to see that he should have done better with what was little more than a half chance.
The second half of extra time once again failed to break the deadlock but James Brandon should be congratulated for saving the day with a tremendous tackle to prevent substitute Nathan Kelly from giving Flowserve the lead.
Right at the death, after another event of handbags at ten paces. Danny Meadows free kick bent well, but unfortunately not well enough to see the ball go just inside the post.
And so the drama went to penalty kicks and as I said earlier, if Newark’s finishing had been half as good during the game we may never have got this far.
William Rawdon (Flowserve) 1-0
Martin Ball (Clifton) ball over the bar 1-0
Jamie Lloyd (Flowserve) 2-0
Tom Maddison (Clifton) 2-1
Danny Meadows (Flowserve) 3-1
Aaron Large (Clifton) ball over the bar 3-1
Sam Agar (Flowserve) 4-1
